Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 18th District.

An American lawyer and politician who was the U.S. Representative for Texas’s 18th congressional district, from 1995 until her death.

Born in Queens, New York, Sheila Jackson Lee earned a scholarship for Black students at New York University before transferring to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Yale University in 1972. She continued to earn a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1975. In 1987, after moving to Houston, she was appointed as a municipal judge for the City of Houston.

In 1989, Sheila Jackson Lee was elected to the Houston City Council. She served in that office until 1994. She then began a campaign for a seat in the U.S. Congress. In the Democratic primary, she went on to easily win the general election.
